Stretch
marks (Formal name: erythrocyanosis) are a form of scarring
generally associated with pregnancy, obesity, bodybuilding, and
— to a lesser extent — puberty. They come about as skin
is overstretched, disrupting the normal production of collagen.
They first appear as reddish or purplish lines, but tend to gradually
fade to a lighter color.

After childbirth
or weight loss, as skin contracts to its original size, stretchmarks
often become much less apparent. Various methods exist to remove
them, including laser treatments, dermabrasion, and topical applications
(e.g. cocoa butter).

Obesity
is a condition where the natural energy reserve, stored in the fatty
tissue of humans and mammals is increased to a point where it is
thought to be a significant risk factor for certain health conditions
as well as increased mortality. Obesity in wild animals is relatively
rare, but it is common in domestic animals like pigs and household
pets who may be overfed and underexercised.
Excessive
body weight has been shown to correlate with stretch
marks, various important diseases, particularly cardiovascular
disease, diabetes and osteoarthritis. Interventions, such as diet
and exercise as well as weight-loss medication and weight-loss surgery
in severe cases are frequently recommended to reduce the risk of
developing disease.
